History

The Beginning

With a desire to spend their retired time in a productive way, Thor Borgen and Ann Wood formed a group of people at the Bay View Terrace in Two Harbors to do small wood crafts. This group operated at this location from about 1974 to 1976. Needing to have more room, they moved to a room in the “Depot” building.

Second Phase

The group expanded to several people, doing small crafts along with refurbishing furniture. The group operated at the “Depot” for several years, until such a time that the “Depot” needed their room for their own use. The group needed to move again.

Third Phase

With nowhere to go, the group proceeded to purchase the land from the railroad company, where the center now sits. An anonymous donor donated the money for the land. Lake County was approached for a donation of $50,000 to build the new shop. This was granted in 1984. The Senior Citizen Woodworking Complex was built at this time. A non-profit organization was then formed, governed by a five member board of directors, which are elected at their annual meeting in May of each year.

Fourth Phase

A group of artists, wood carvers, and photographers then organized with the idea of adding a wing on the west side of the building for their use. Another donor came forth with monies to do this project. This was completed around 1990. Financial support comes from the “users” of the building, along with some outside donations. The local “Recreation Board” finances the utilities for the building.

We have people coming from all corners of the county to learn new crafts and expand on what they already know. Many people find it a daily destination, a place to go for companionship and a daily connection. Coffee, cookies, and a cribbage board are always available.

Come and join us, we would like to have you!

Education

There are many discussions around the cribbage board in the conference room of the Workshop. One of the most talked about topics is the lack of younger generations not having the opportunity or access to the “Shop” classes that we had in our youth. The trades are suffering from this lack of trained and skilled workers. Not just skilled trades are affected, we are even seeing a declining number of hobbyists.

As a result of these discussions, the Board and Members of the Senior Citizen Workshop and Art Center have embarked on a “crusade” to bring the younger generations into the Workshop and Art Center and teach them basic skills. Our first venture will be offering woodworking classes for children ages 12 through 18. The first students will be from the local area and comprised of home schoolers. At this time, while we work out the details on the curriculum and scheduling, the woodworking classes are by invitation only.

If you are a home schooler in the Two Harbors area, please use the Contact portion of our website to let us know you, and your child(ren) are interested.
