Jamie Juenemann

Jamie Juenemann
Jamie’s photography experience started in 1990 when he took a black and white photography class in college taught by Gloria Brush. “Spending hours in the dark room cropping and squeezing every ounce of contrast out of those early classroom photos really taught me to be patient and methodical in the field. And being a college student taught me not to waste film! It was one of the best classes I’ve ever taken.” After a friend gave him a Graflex 4” x 5” press camera a few years later, Jamie’s focus switched to landscape and environmental photography in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of idol, Ansel Adams. With the digital revolution in photography in the late 90’s came a change in cameras and an increase in ability and capability. Jamie’s camera of choice is now a Nikon Coolpix 8700, an extremely powerful, light weight camera that fits easily into his backpack alongside the tent, food and flyrod. “Even though the North Shore where I live is beautiful in its own right, my true photographic passion lies in the American West. Spending up to a month in the alpine country with my family each summer really allows me to slow down and focus on composition and detail. I just never seem to have this same opportunity back home.”

With a growing archive of western landscapes, Jamie’s goal is to try to sell some prints at galleries in Montana and Wyoming on the next family trip this summer. Juenemann has been a member of NSPC since 2005.

Jeffrey Nast

Jeffrey Nast
Jeff's interest in photography began (way...) back in 1972 while visiting his brother Dan, who was stationed at an army base in Kaiserslautern, Germany. While in the base PX he noticed a Canon FTb that was "on sale" and bought it. Unfortunately, the FTb was stolen from a high school band room locker the following year and Jeff replaced it with a Minolta SRT101. Many late nights were spent in the high school photo lab with his good friend Nathan Benoy. Sometimes the teacher would leave behind a box of paper for their work at keeping the photo lab clean. Seeing the advantage of technological changes, Jeff bought the newly announced Canon A-1 in the fall of 1978.

The A-1 served long and hard! Being an outdoor enthusiast, Jeff spent many days in kayaks, canoes, backpacking, ice climbing, hunting, fishing, flying an ultralight and road trips... and the poor camera was always along. In another loss to thieves, all of his camera gear was stolen in a 1997 home break-in. Heartbroken that a long time friend was gone, Jeff then bought a Canon EOS Elan IIe as a replacement and continues to carry it today.

In 1999, Jeff purchased a Mamiya C330 from a pathologist at the hospital where both work -- Jeff's first step into the world of medium format. The Mamiya still functions well today and goes almost everywhere the Canon goes... In 2007 Jeff raised the bar and acquired a couple of Mamiya Pro645 from another club member and has since added to the lense collection. Talk about a heavy backpack! Jeff's photographic focus at this time primarily consists of nature landscapes. Jeff is a past president of the North Shore Photo Club and also a member of the Duluth Photography Institute (DPI).

Jeff, the only "filmer" in the club, currently lives near Knife River MN with his wife Diane. Their two sons Andrew and Ted have left the nest empty. Andy graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and is currently employed by Amazon.com. Ted is attending Northwestern College in St. Paul MN. Both young men have shown both an interest in and are developing an aptitude for photography.

Brian Rauvola

Brian Rauvola
Brian is a past president of the NSPC and has been a "professional" photographer for the last 12 years having owned and operated HBR Photographic Studios in Two Harbors until October of 2005. He also teaches full time. During his tenure at the Studio, he did wedding photography as well as portraiture for high school seniors, families, children, and more. He currently shoots both digital with a Nikon D200 and 4x5 large format. Marie Rehnert

Marie Rehnert
Marie joined our club in the winter of 2010 and has loved photography since her first Kodak 110 Instamatic Camera she received at her 8th grade graduation. Through the years, as she sought more advanced cameras, she has kept her eyes open for those "Captured Moments" that would end up in the family albums through the weddings, graduations, births, and special occasions. She and her husband live on the Minnesota North Shore where they work together in ministry at a local church where he is the Pastor.

Marie has a passion for music and teaching, and while her many responsibilities of ministry keep her busy, Marie is a country girl and has a love for venturing out to the out-of-doors. With camera in hand she loves to discover the beauty of the nature of Northern Minnesota through her lens. Her eye is usually focused on nature phenomena, which will include animals, people, landscapes, water, flowers, birds, trees and the beautiful seasons we have on the North Shore. Her love for people will capture those special moments of expression that will be treasured by loved ones for years to come.

Marie has had her work displayed in gallery at the Vanilla Bean Cafe in Two Harbors, MN and at the Duluth Photography Institute in Duluth, MN. Under the name of "Captured Moments" Marie creates original cards, prints and gifts and enjoys displaying and selling them along the North Shore and at Arts & Craft Fairs and Bazaars. She also enjoys entering, and sometimes winning competitions both locally and internationally. Though she has never experienced professional training, her love for those "Captured Moments" are seen in her work.

As a member of North Shore Photography Club and the Duluth Photography Institute (DPI), she deeply appreciates what she learns from the 'professionals' and is enjoying continually implementing new concepts into her work. Her instrument of choice is a Canon EOS Rebel XSi. "The digital opportunities are wonderful!" Marie's portfolio can be seen and purchased at Red Bubble.

Mare Schlangen

Mare Schlangen
Mary Schlangen has been a member of the Two Harbors Photo Club since moving to the area in 2002. She became very interested in photography after taking a photography class in college, and for years shot black and white and developed in her basement darkroom. Mare recently switched to digital, and considers herself very much a beginner, still learning all that her camera can do. Her favorite things to shoot are portraits/people pictures, especially faces. Or maybe that's what happens when you have young kids who are camera hams. Mare is a small animal veterinarian and lives with her husband, 2 kids, a chocolate lab and 2 3-legged kitties just outside of Two Harbors. Her other interests include climbing, kayaking, hiking, painting, playing women's hockey, and reading/writing. She wrote and illustrated a children's book called Zoe's Good-bye which was published in 2005.

Here is a sample of Mare's work!

Webmaster's note: On August 10, 2007, the North Shore Photo Club lost a good friend and fine photographer. Mare was killed when her vehicle was hit broadside by another car that ran a stop sign. The club has decided to keep Mare's bio and photographs on this web site in her memory. Donations are being accepted at Grand Avneue Veterinary Clinic, 5503 Grand Ave., Duluth, MN 55807. Make checks payable to "Dr. Mary Memorial Fund". Please visit the Legacy Guest Book and leave a message for Mary's family and friend to see.
